Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner Crashes After Ahmedabad Takeoff – Over 240 Feared Dead

Flight AI 171, bound for London Gatwick, crashed mere seconds post takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, descending only about 650 ft before hitting the B.J. Medical College hostel during lunch hour.

The Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner carried 242 people (230 passengers and 12 crew). Tragically, 241 onboard were killed, with at least 33 fatalities on the ground; 61+ more injured.

There is one confirmed survivor: Viswashkumar Ramesh, a 40‑year‑old British‑Indian in seat 11A. He exited through a broken exit door and survived with injuries.

Among the fallen were 10 crew members, including Captain Sumeet Sabharwal (8,200+ flight hours) and First Officer Clive Kundar (1,100 hours).

Emergency services responded swiftly. CCTV footage showed the aircraft lose altitude and erupt in flames, with locals fleeing amid thick smoke.
